Biography

Mark Stiffler has been a member of the California Bar since 1986. He started his legal career as a prosecutor in the San Diego City Attorney's Office Criminal Division. He served as a Trial Deputy, Supervising Trial Deputy, and then as Head Trial and Appellate Deputy, while conducting nearly 30 criminal jury trials. Mark then moved to the Civil Division, where he represented the City and many different City employees in lawsuits covering many different practice areas. He specialized in the following areas of law: personal injury; dangerous conditions of public property; civil rights violations; police misconduct; employment law; CEQA; and construction contracts. Mark tried nearly 30 jury trials in both the state and federal courts.

In addition to his trial practice, Mark had an active administrative law practice, where he conducted numerous civil service hearings for employees appealing various types of discipline. He also frequently practiced in the appellate courts, writing more than ten appeals and arguing them before both the California Fourth District Court of Appeal and the United States Ninth District Court of Appeal.

Since retiring from the City Attorney's Office in 2008, Mark has principally represented individuals in all types of serious personal injury matters or labor and employment matters.

Prior to law school, Mark served as a Peace Corps volunteer for three years in the Kingdom of Tonga, in the South Pacific. After his volunteer service concluded, Mark was asked to serve as a paid member of the Peace Corps staff training new groups of volunteers.
