How age discrimination shows up in the workplace

Age discrimination can be a subtle but significant issue in many workplaces across California. This form of discrimination occurs when an employee or job applicant receives less favorable treatment because of their age.

It’s important to recognize the various forms age discrimination can take, so you can identify and address any issues that may arise in your own workplace. Understanding the potential manifestations of age discrimination can help in the maintenance of a fair and respectful work environment.

Subtle exclusion from projects

Older employees may find themselves subtly excluded from key projects or important meetings. This exclusion may stem from assumptions about their technical skills. Some people assume they can’t adapt to change. It is not due to an objective assessment of their skills and contributions.

Stereotypical comments

Comments that might seem harmless can actually be indicative of age discrimination. Remarks like “slow down, you’re not young anymore” or jokes about someone being “over the hill” contribute to a discriminatory workplace environment.

Lack of advancement opportunities

Older workers may be passed over for promotions or professional development opportunities. Decisions to overlook them might be influenced by assumptions that they are nearing retirement and less interested in advancing their careers, rather than an objective evaluation of their experience and capability.

Inequitable layoffs

In layoffs, management may target older employees to cut costs. Older employees might also face more pressure to retire than younger colleagues.

Employers should strive to create policies that promote age diversity and inclusion, ensuring that all employees, regardless of age, have equal opportunities to succeed and contribute. By fostering respect and equality, businesses can benefit from the diverse views and experiences of employees of all ages.
